As a Naturopath, much of my work entails supporting parents to understand and support their children through illness and developmental challenges. Over the years I have been asked to give a number of talks exploring Health and the Meaning of Illness in Children. Some of the common themes I have lectured on are listed below. Please contact me if you are interested in organising a talk – all talks can be tailored to individual requirements.
The Meaning of Childhood Illness and a Positive View of Fever

Why do we get sick, why do children experience fevers so readily and how can the process of illness provide a positive stepping stone in child development. Learn about the stages and purpose of fevers and how the fever process can be supported to help manage common childhood illnesses.
We will share practical advice and proven remedies to give you tools to use at home, including ‘Lemon Foot Socks’.

Sphagnis and Enveloping the Child in a Protective Cocoon
Today we are all exposed to a ever increasing level of sensory stimulation. Unlike adults, children are still developing and learning to filter the external influences they come into contact with.
This can be quite overwhelming at times – for some children more than others. How can we protect or limit the effect on our children when they are still part of this fast paced world?
Rudolf Steiner spoke of a time when we would need extra protection from external stimulation and outside influences. He suggested that this protection could be provided by Sphagnum or Peat Moss.
‘Sphagnis’ are a special Peat Moss and Plant Oil emulsion that when used externally, will cover the body in a protective cocoon. The Sphagni will help provide a second skin and act as a filter between outer stimulation and inner experiences.
We will discuss, learn about and experience the different sphagnis – Rose, Hypericum, Lavender, Sandalwood, Lemon and Eucalyptus – and when and how to use each one.
Working and Understanding the Different Ages and Stages of Child Development
Steiner Education and Anthroposophic Medicine recognise that children go through different stages of development as they grow. At some stages they are more inward, or at other times, more confident and other times ready to explore new challenges. By understanding what to expect, what to look for and what to expect at each age, we can learn to adjust and meet our children where they are ready to be met.
Many parents breathe a sigh of relief when they tell me their story and we relate it back to the age and development stage their child is at. With this understanding effective strategies can be worked with and the child met in a new way to help bring a positive outcome in a challenging time.
